Christy's Bedlinen (Review)

Like most parents who don't seem to spend anywhere near enough time enjoying sleep, I am fond of my bed; it's like an old friend who I don't catch up with often enough.

I'm also a bit fussy with the bedlinen that I have, I like the soft and easy iron aspect of poly-cotton (even though I know it's not really an approved of or trendy fabric) and I don't like printed materials, so the design has to be woven. I also like cream or neutral colours so that it doesn't alarm me when I wake up in the middle of the night to tend to The Boy. Finding decent bedlinen can be a bit of a nightmare at times.

Therefore when I was recently sent some gorgeous bedding from Christy, I couldn't wait to get it on the bed.

Christy's bedlinen

The Mandalay range is made from 87.5% cotton and 12.5% silk blend jacquard on the face of the duvet, and 200 thread count cotton percale on the underside, making is soft and cosy to sleep under. The beautiful and delicate jacquard design on the cover is in a warm linen shade and has a luxurious silk yarn in the weave which gives it added lustre. I actually feel like I have a grown-up bed for once!

The duvet cover comes in a double, king or super-king size, and the pillowcases in either an Oxford square or Oxford rectangle size. The photos above are of the king-size with Oxford rectangle pillowcases. Priced at £159.00 for the duvet, and £45.00 for the pillowcase pairs, it's clearly a luxury bedlinen set, and in all honesty out of my normal budget. However, now I've experienced how soft, smooth and luxurious quality bedding like this is, I'll be hard pushed to cope with my supermarket polycotton again!

Bedding by Kings & Queens: The Specialist Duvet Company (Review)

I can't think of a single person in the world who wouldn't name sleep as one of their favourite pasttimes or a bed as one of their favourite places (and not like that!). I think it was Gloria Hunniford who said (in an advert promoting a mattress company) that you should invest in good quality shoes and beds, because if you're not using one then you're using the other. It's why we spent £500 last year on a really good quality mattress, because every parent out there knows that every second of sleep is a treasured moment and should be enjoyed as much as possible.

However, it's not just the thing that you sleep on but what you sleep under that can ensure a good night's sleep and so we were recently sent new bedding for all of us to try out. I know, I needed to spend more time sleeping for the purpose of a review. It's a hard life, hey?

First up were pillows from the Silk Indulgence range by Kings & Queens, The Specialist Bedding Company. Mr. TBaM and I were sent these, but seeing our heads on them would be slightly boring and so I asked The Boy to see how fluffy and comfortable they were.

I think it's safe to say that they passed the crash test he subjected them to, and having then had a pillow fight with him I can verify that they are very soft and fluffy indeed. With 5% of the filling being silk I'm not really surprised.

Next up was the Silk Indulgence duvet from Kings & Queens in king size and 4.5 tog thickness which is perfect for hiding under and making dens, as well as ensuring you head off to the land of nod with a smooth ride.

It shocks my mum that we still have both windows in our bedroom open every night (even if only a fraction) but I find that a cooler room gives a better night's sleep. We've just switched back from our 7.5 tog duvet to the 4.5 tog duvet featured above, and it is very comfortable indeed and really keeps its shape. The Silk Indulgence duvet is available in single through to super kingsize, and with a choice of 4.5, 10.5 or 13.5 tog. Certainly something for every sleeper!

The Silk Indulgence range uses Kings & Queens' Smartfil® advanced fibre technology which is "four times finer yet plumper than ordinary hollowfibre fillings and has been blended with silk here for added indulgence; allows 30% more air to circulate around the body, creating greater warmth efficiency and a fresher sleeping environment; has been uniquely blended and tested to ensure greater durability than standard hollowfibre."

Kings & Queens duvets, pillows and mattress toppers are available from Tesco Direct, Littlewoods, Grattan and JD Williams.

Competition: The Little Green Sheep

Thank goodness this week that I've had a good selection of bed-sheets. Quite frankly The Boy has gone through more than enough of them with this gastritis.

However, one of my favourite sheets to put on his cotbed is this really pretty, cool-green one from the Little Green Sheep:

The Sleep Fairy

I can't remember the last time that The Boy slept through.

It has been at least two months, possibly three, since he went to bed at half past seven and woke up eleven hours later. The two nights when he was comatosed due to a cold don't count because I didn't sleep well through worry.

It's not as bad as it could be because Mr. TheBoyandMe is really kind and does the middle of the night wake-ups. I tend to sit and sob otherwise. However, just because I'm not up with him doesn't mean that I'm asleep.

So I can't work out what the problem is. Just as soon as I thought I'd worked out that it was the night terrors, it was teething that was waking him. In the last few days I've come to the conclusion that it might be a full bladder.

More and more he's calling out in his sleep that he needs to go to the toilet. Last night was the third time in a week that we've lifted him, put him on the potty and he's done an enormous wee.

What do you do? Do you lift your child for a wee halfway through the night?

Then we have the morning wake-ups. He used to wake up anytime between half past six and seven o'clock, but recently it's been getting earlier and earlier and we have no idea why. The six o'clock is just too early when he hasn't stopped buggering around at bedtime until nine, then has a half an hour disturbance at around midnight for a wee. And the clocks are going back in a week or so; that's going to make it five o'clock!

He is exhausted, we are exhausted. And I can't see the wood for the trees. I feel I'm missing something obvious but can't work it out.

Has anyone got any ideas please?
