Days 26 – 32 of Project 365

26-32 of 365

26. Breather (Rubbish day weatherwise and I was nervous about dental surgery the next day so the boys burnt off some energy in the local version of softplay hell! I tried to get the perfect ball-pit photograph, yet 140 photos later it was this one which appealed to me.)

27. Pitter-patter (New photographic challenge: trying to capture raindrops falling, I haven't managed it this time but the patio reflected my mood – flooded. Having had the first bit of dental surgery on Friday (to correct various screw-ups which have plagued my mouth for around three years), my mouth was aching a lot. Just another droplet in the puddle of bad dentistry I've suffered.)

28. Mummy (The Boy has been enjoying drawing pictures on the easel since we brought it back downstairs last week, today was a picture of mummy. I had two belly buttons though. Either that or he'd drawn my nipples down by my waist, not that far off then!)

29. Book worm (Snuggled down on a cushion, The Boy started exploring his own reading books nestled in his new Tidy Books book caddy – competition to follow this week.)

30. Squint (I struggled with the whole damn project today and desperately wanted to just stop. However, the good folk of the 365 Facebook group buoyed me back up again and this is my scrumpybum boy after his bath. This is the day I realised he really needed his hair cut.)

31. 恭禧發財 (Bring on the year of the horse.)

32. Fresh (No editing, just my beautiful boy enjoying a gale force wind on the beach.)

Days 202-208 of Project 365

202-208 of 265

202. Fave Food (Massively contrived! MASSIVELY! However, The Boy decided to climb a tree at Westonbirt Arboretum so that he didn't become The Gruffalo's fave food!)

203. Grey (This colourful photo was taken to try and lift my grey mood after a rubbish INSET day where I ran around doing things for everyone else and achieved nothing for myself. Additionally, the end-of-year tiredness kicked in and I was exhausted and very melancholy.)

204. I Drew This! (Welcome to the family TBaM! I am so proud of him for this, I think it's brilliant.)

205. D Is For… (Danger! He does this funny little hopping up from behind thing onto the swing, only he planted his feet on the seat and stood up instead! Eeeek!)

206. Ground (We met an old friend up at the clifftop park with her one year old son. She was late and so while we waited The Boy had a swinging conversation with the ten year old boy next to him. The Boy won, which I was quite proud of, and cast some beautiful shadows on the ground as he was swinging.)

207. The Everyday (The temperature of the day started off quite mild, but after a phone from nursery at 8.30 to ask me to bring him in earlier than I normally do as they were going for a walk that morning, I ended up hot and bothered, rushing around. I got hom at 10.15 and then managed to settle down to have some breakfast and do some school work. Once I'd picked him up from nursery, we popped into Parc Play for an hour or so during which time the temperature soared to 28°C. We came home, borrowed a pump from a friend and blew up his new paddling pool. This sunshine photo is the everyday at the moment.)

208. Black + White (It's pouring down today, which is fine because the garden really needs it, but the world is a little bit grey and monochrome today. We also need a break from all the amazing outdoor play we've had; sometimes you just need a 'chill out and do nothing' day. Definitely a day for some work on pre-writing skills.)

TRU Review: These Aren't Just Any Crayons…

Last week, we took delivery of our first parcel from Toys R Us as part of the Toyologist programme. The Boy and I ripped it open excitedly and found a whole host of lovely products inside to review. The item that he kept going back to time and time again, and was most insistent that I open was a pack of crayons. I know! Crayons, I ask you.

However, these aren't just crayons, these are Melissa & Doug crayons.

Aren't they pretty? And look at the lovely hard-wearing case that they come in!

(I will say though that luckily, the pack we received had the colours arranged like a spectrum which pleased my OCD tendencies. The picture above disturbs me slightly).

Now I don't want you thinking that I am a crayon snob (because I'm not), but there are an awful lot of rubbish colouring implements out there: luckily these are not them. The Melissa & Doug crayons are really good quality, partly because of the fact that they are made of plastic, not wax, which makes them very durable. The colours are bold and the lines that come from them are fine and even (trust me, I rant in school about children's inability to colour properly, poor materials do not help them).

Using my teacher-head here, not only am I impressed with the materials that the crayons are made from, but also the shape of them as they are triangular. In the marketing blurb it talk about how this is good because they don't roll-away and this is true; however for me I can see that they promote the correct grip.

Accompanying the crayons was the Melissa & Doug Jumbo Colouring Pad. I really like this pad because each of the fifty sheets has a large picture drawn on it. Not cartoon-style drawings, which annoy me because they don't resemble the real-life images, but proper representations in decent outlines. They also are only printed on only one side so that if your child, unlike The Boy, did a super job of colouring in and you wanted to display it, you can! The paper is really good quality, doesn't crumple or rip while they are colouring, and it tears from the pad really easily.

The Boy got straight in there!

We had The Boy's cousins over on the weekend and this is what happened:

Girl Cousin said she liked them because "they are like pens so it makes you try harder". Boy Cousin said, "they are funny shaped, I like them". Fiery Girl Cousin said, "they feel nice to use and I like the colours." The Boy said, "colour this, YES!"

There you go: out of the mouths of babes!

The crayons come in a pack of 24 and are priced at £4.99, the same price as the jumbo colouring pad.

I was provided with these items free of charge as part of the Toys R Us Toyologist programme and for review purposes. My opinions are my own and honest, as always.

Saturday 21st May 2011 – 'Face' (141/365)

Indulge me because I'm putting two in for today. We've been drawing faces to go with this meme, and The Boy needed a little guidance on how to draw a face so I drew one first. He then went back and overdrew on it. He added to my picture, look:

No, he hasn't gauged out the eyes; he's drawn glasses on because Daddy, Nana and Grandad all wear them.
