Printrbook: Instagram Photo Book (Review)

I love Instagram; the whole concept of taking a photo and sharing it with friends and family, or like-minded people, is really appealing to me. It's a great social media platform with a huge audience, and the people I follow are made up of friends, bloggers, pure Instagrammers (no blogs), or complete strangers on the other side of the world with an amazing photographic library. And that's the thing about Instagram, the people who use it do so for different reasons; to share their artwork, their stories or the precious moments during the day.

Basically for me it's like a 365 project but with more opportunity to record our lives.

Over the past few months, I've seen quite a few bloggers share the various ways they've found of getting their virtual photos actually into their hands in real life. Some come in the format of fridge magnets, some are posters, some are individual Polaroid style photographs. All of these are fine and dandy, but to me it means I then have to find somewhere to put them; the fridge is reserved for The Boy's paintings, a poster doesn't appeal to me, and I have more small photographs than I know what to do with. I've still got prints from photoshoots when The Boy was a year old to do something with. I certainly don't want more loose photos.

About a month ago, I had a 'like' on one of my photos from a company called Printrgram. They have since had to change their name as Instagram have issued new rules, and are now called Printrbook.

I digress.

Printrbook is a third party service (not associated with Instagram in any way) which allows users to create photobooks of their Instagram photos. It is incredibly easy to use;

  • sign in using your Instagram login details, select either 25 or 50 photos (same amount of pages, just printed on one side or both sides of each page),
  • edit the front cover and whether dates or captions are required on each page,
  • preview,
  • pay £10.00 plus £2.00 p&p.

The books measure 10cmx10cm and the pages are 150gsm Inaset paper while the cover is 300gsm Trucard. The paper used is FSC certified, produced using power from 100% renewable resources and Printrbook have a carbon free status by offsetting all site emissions through the charity Rainforest Concern.

And I'm very, very impressed with the quality of the book.

I've selected three photos for the bottom row which show off the quality of the printing (click here, here or here to see the original Instagram images), which I think is very good considering Instagram only stores them as 612×612 pixels resolution. I also like the fact that they aren't glossy, but have a soft sheen to the paper.

The books cost £10.00 with £2.00 postage and packaging. I think that's actually really good value for money, especially when an equivalent book from one of the main online photo stores would cost well over £15.00, and need the photos uploading to them. I've just demonstrated the process to my husband and it took four minutes to access my Instagram photos and go through the editing process. As a web-based software developer, he was impressed. As a busy woman who doesn't have time to faff around uploading photos that are already online elsewhere, I was impressed.

A perfect size to stereotypically fit in a handbag (or laptop bag, Filofax, briefcase or suit jacket pocket), I love this as my first ever 'boasting book'. Skimming through my Instagram album takes ages with over 2,500 images in there. Here, I've got the best of our Spring and Summer ready to hand. They would also make excellent Christmas presents for grandparents!

I will be ordering from Printrbook again, because it's quick, easy, good value for money and really good quality.

I was provided with a free review code to produce a book, my opinion is honest and unbiased.

Days 181-187 of Project 365

181-187 of 365

181. Mr. Bloom (We'd discovered some cheap sunflowers in Aldi (99p each) and as our sunflower seedlings were destroyed accidentally by daddy a week ago, we bought these to replace what should have been. The Boy has taken over watering them until I get the time to plant them!)

182. Happiness Is… (This is the start of me using the FatMumSlim PhotoADay Instagram prompts for my 365 photos. I took a cracking profile photo of The Boy which you can see on my Instagram feed, but I chose this photo as these two, and my garden in the Summer, are what makes me happy.)

183. Shoes (A very busy day with gymnastics, feeding the swans at the nature reserve, shopping and then we popped into Parc Play in Cardiff for 45 minutes run around. We'd bought a season pass on Sunday; £40 until November and at £5 a visit otherwise, I decided we'd definitely come more than eight times over the Summer.)

184. Cold (A really rubbish day in work where I did nothing more than babysit classes all day. A rosé spritzer was definitely needed!)

185. Red, White or Blue (We'd seen Mister Maker doing this activity the other day, and decided to have a go. Really good fun and minimal mess.)

186. Love (I love all of the things in this picture (and some that aren't!): my son, pizza and chips from the local takeaway, Pimm's, my husband (especially for getting the pizza) and a setting sun over my green haven.)

187. Fave Smell (Contrived? No! My favourite smell is the beach in Summer: scorching hot sand, crashing waves, ketchup-laden chips, salty air.)

Days 20-26 of Project 365 (Country Kids)

20-26 of 365

20. 'Birdman' (Yes we had a snowball fight but who wants another picture of that? We spent time on Sunday putting out food for the pair of blackbirds and Mistlethrush which we have in the garden. The fatballs had frozen so needed crushing, and we had half a loaf of bread to distribute. The Boy then spent ten minutes calling them, before going inside to wait at the window for them.)

21. 'Heart-pressing' (The Boy is obsessed with Instagram. 50% of the likes you'll see from the little green bug are actually done by him, he particularly likes seeing pictures of other children playing and I have to tell him who they are. Daily I have to look for photos of Jenny, Burton and Jenson; think we need another playdate. If your photo on Instagram is of a child and I've liked it, it'll be him. If it's got a comment or of food, it'll be me liking it!)

22. 'Artist At Work' (We spend a long time making the most amazing snow picture today; 95% of it was done by him – the 5% done by me was the gluing because he's a lazy tyke! He then wanted to take a photograph of it because he was so proud of it.)

23. 'Meet The Family' (I was incredibly disappointed today to discover that, despite two inches of snow falling on compacted snow and ice, school was not closed. I made my way in to my job, but was out of there by 3.45. At 4pm we were making snowmen in the garden! I'm on the left, Mr. TBaM is in the middle and The Boy is on the right.)

24: 'Now, Which One?' (This giant Kerplunk we had for review a few months ago, is still one of the most played games in the house! Problem is that now he's cottoned on that he needs the least amount of balls to win, and is very competitive!)

25: 'Eat Your Heart Out, Gordon!' (Uninspiring photograph, but it's a milestone snap. The Boy made his own tea tonight: pizza pocket. He cut the pitta bread in half, sliced up the chicken and grated the cheese himself, before stuffing them in the pitta pocket. And yes that's a sharp Kitchen Devil vegetable knife. Give a child the correct tools to use – under supervision – from the start otherwise they just need to be retaught. He'd be more likely to cut himself with a blunt knife as the knife would slip!)

26: 'Birdies, NO!' (Today has been a non-day. I hate days like this; slow to start and before you know it, the weather has turned and the light's almost gone. They affect my mood greatly, pyjama days on a weekend do not help the happy family way of life for us! All too late in the day we went to feed the swans at the local country park, they must have been starving because as soon as we walked towards them and they spotted the bag of bread, they were out the water and coming! To me, it was something like a horror movie, The Boy took it in his stride, and Mr. TBaM stood there telling them off for pecking his bottom! Nutter! The Boy then made us go for a walk in the pitch-black around the lakes, luckily we had our torches!)

My favourite photo this week is Day 20: 'Birdman'

Sunday 22nd July 2012 – 'Upside Down' (204/366)

The prompt for Photo A Day July today is: Upside Down. I've tried all day but somehow just haven't managed to get a shot. However, upon sitting down and seeing all the strewn toys in the living room this evening, I noticed one particular scene in the family Playmobil picnic.

It seems that The Boy's aunt and I had too much to drink last night!
