365 Photographers: Susan Snaps

Apologies for the break in the series, Christmas and life got in the way!

Project 365 is a wonderful photography used to document daily life and the little moments which are otherwise forgotten. I'm in my fourth year and, aside from an incident yesterday where I never wanted to take another photograph ever again, look back fondly on all the memories. However, there is another wonderous aspect to the project; the community which has sprung up because of it. I feel it's a real privilege to see people's everyday life and families grow and change, especially over the past two years.

I've mentioned before what a pleasure it has been in the past to find a stranger join in on the linky. To find someone from another part of the world, completely unrelated to the UK Parent Blogging world, joining in with the linky is a real surprise, and a joy.

Finding someone from Australia in the linky was a big surprise!

Susan Snaps is one of the most wonderful photography blogs that I've come across. Susan was a journalist but is now a university lecturer, and lives in Brisbane, Queensland. As she has a teenage son who has opinions about his privacy, she doesn't tend to feature him often on her blog. However, this allows her to have a wider subject matter, especially as she can be regularly found wandering around the South Bank amidst the street performers and families picnicking. This makes for wonderful photographs, joy and laughter oozes from every pixel of the screen.

I've tried to narrow my selection of her photographs down to my favourite four, but gosh it was difficult!

Susan Snaps

I've asked Susan in the past if she is a 'stealth photographer' like Stephanie from Point & Shoot The World, but no, she actually engages in conversation with the people she snaps and finds out their story; who they are, what they're doing and gains their permission to use the photos. I love the vibrancy in this photograph of the laughing girl at the all inclusive Springflare festival, combined with the silhouette of the acrobat at the South Bank it goes some way to show its fabulous and cosmopolitan atmosphere.

Susan Snaps

One of Susan's other favourite subjects is birds. She's commented that until she started the 365 Project, she'd never taken a photograph of a bird but now she can't stop. I spent ages trying to decide between the wonderfully colourful parrots and exotic birds, however this image of a common pigeon supping on a public water fountain really appealed to me! Water is another common feature in her 365 photos, and I love the angle of this water feature with the perfect sky behind. Susan has a real talent for capturing moving water, the splash of it tipping over the final spout is beautiful.

These are Susan's favourite six from her two years of Project 365 so far.

31/03/2013 – Before the project I had not ever taken a photo of a bird. I don't think I even noticed them. Now it is on of my things and I reckon I'm not bad at them.

31/12/2012 – Three things to recommend this photo
1) I survived the first year
2) I love our pool and it features a lot in the project
3) I do get to document a lot of the lives of those important people around me (here my niece Cleo)

Susan Snaps

25/11/2012 – There are a whole pile of community events I would never have bothered to visit if it wasn't for the camera. This one was take at South Bank – a fantastic area in walking distance of my home my go-to place when I'm not feeling very inspired (so about three times a week). I see living so close to such a vibrant, interesting place to be a big bonus for me and my project

Susan Snaps

16/04/2013 – Getting out and about with the camera means you get to know the people in the neighbourhood a lot better. I like that. the best thing about this image is that it was when I took the new puppy in to visit Margaret next door. Conversations with Margaret always revolve around incontinence pads, problems with the hearing aid or doctors' appointments – except when I take Rumple. It's the joy of both of them (plus Rumple is my 365 buddy now. He's normally with me as I walk the streets)

Day 271

28/09/2013 – I read the manual. Well I google searched "How to take photographs of fireworks". I never read manuals so I was really proud of myself for doing so. It's part of the project teaching me better use of my camera.

Susan Snaps

02/10/2013 – I loved this photo so much it is in the process of becoming canvas wall art. It's the sort of reward you get for carry the "proper" camera with you everywhere (and living in a beautiful part of the world).

  • When did you start doing the 365 photo project, and why?

I started on January 1, 2012. I'd heard about it somewhere and decided it was just what I needed.

As background, I work full-time and a family with very high physical and mental health needs. Between us we have a cardiologist, neurologist, two gastroenterologists, two psychiatrists, two psychologists, a development pediatrician and doubtless others I've forgotten. Life can easily feel like an endless procession of work, washing, Woolworths and waiting rooms – if you let it.

I decided that I needed something for myself in all that and some way of finding something different, something special, something beautiful every day.

At first the plan was just the photos with a bit of a caption. In fact on my first post I said "I may comment about it or let the image talk for itself". It hasn't turned out like that. As a former print journalist (now working in a university) the need to write kicked in, and the rambling anecdotes are as important as the photos that loosely inspired them. It's about indulging my creative brain.

  • Why did you decide to continue the project for a second (and third) year?

Basically I couldn't stop. About mid way through the first year I decided I never wanted to take  another photo again. But I was too stubborn to give up. I was counting down the days. But then I realised what a great creative outlet it was and even though we continue a love/hate relationship, I knew I would miss it.

  • What's the best bit about doing a 365 photo project?

For many people it's about documenting a year (or more) in the life of a child and it becomes a precious record where they seem to change every day. I have a teenager and 365 days of sulking in a bedroom would not make for very good material (I joke, but only a bit). He would certainly never consent to that much of his life being recorded and at his age that's fine. For me it's about the creative process. I'm a much better photographer now than I was at the beginning. But mostly if I hadn't made this commitment it would be far too easy for life to get in the way. This gets me out of the house every day looking at the world through fresh eyes and seeing things I would never have noticed before.

  • Are there times when you've wanted to give up, why? What kept you going?

Just about every day. Sometimes it feels like it is too hard to fit it in which is exactly why I need it. I continue because I'm stubborn, because just when I think "right, that's it" someone writes an incredibly lovely comment and because deep down I know I love it and it really is the only thing I do just for myself. It's permission to be selfish.

  • What tips would you give to anyone who wants to start a 365 project?

Remember it's your project. Don't think that because everyone else is taking photos of their child's Easter bonnet you have to or conversely because everyone is taking photos of the Christmas concert you can't. Make your own rules and if some days you have to take a photo of socks just to stay in the game then socks it is. Just take it and move on.

  • Anything else you'd like to add?

I am not a very good 365 buddy. People on the link have been incredibly generous in their time and comments and have spurred me on to keep going and I have not held up my end of the bargain. Every week, I promise myself I'll do better. Every week, life seems to get in the way. That's why communities such as TheBoyandMe are so helpful. They spur you on and let you be you.

How do you see the world around you?

Please pop back next Thursday when I introduce you to another longstanding member of the 365 community; Fun As A Gran.

Days 12 – 18 Of Project 365

12-18 of 365

(Some of these are the wrong order to fit in the collage)

12. Lego Head (The Boy is getting quite good at deciphering the LEGO instructions although he does need some guidance as they seem to miss steps often. Sunday was a quite day of playing in the house.)

13. The Big Bear (After the CBeebies Stargazing focus last week, The Boy has been passionate about stars and the constellations. I sent Mr. TBaM into the loft to retrieve my grandad's constellation globe which is around 35 years old. We spend a good half an hour examining the different 'people' in the sky.)

14. Astronomer (I gathered together all of the resources I could think of in the house, and set up a stargazing den for him in the corner of the dining room complete with a battery-operated orrery.)

15. Hello! (Wednesday evening, I couldn't bear to put another sleeping child photo in, no matter how cute he is asleep. This is him using the slinky as a megaphone. Because he's 4.)

16. The Boot (We bought The Boy a globe at Christmas as he often asks where some countries are, and he was eager to find out where Italy was after school on Thursday.)

17. Dusk (After a relatively mediocre day at home on my own feeling very meh, I decided that we were going down the beach after school. We togged up in wellies and waterproofs and went and enjoyed the most beautiful sunset while throwing all our energy into plopping pebbles.)

18. Mr. Fix-it (Mr. TBaM fell over cycling home from work and damaged his gear slightly, which completely fell of into the spokes causing more damage! The Boy helped him fix it this afternoon following a busy morning at a new soft-play centre.)

Days 5 – 11 of Project 365

5-11 of 365

5. Flutter (Of all the toys that The Boy received at Christmas, the £1.99 plastic men with a plastic parachute attached to their back are his favourite by far. He will happily spend an hour floating them down and then going and fetching them to start all over again. And those aren't Christmas lights still up as I took all my decorations down; those are fairy lights that I put back up to brighten the hallway.)

6. Happiness Is… (… was the topic for his Christmas homework and so in true last minute style we sat down to do it on Monday afternoon. The Boy decided that happiness is Christmas because he likes having people over. He wrote all of that independently.)

7. The Weekly Stock Shot #1 (First day back at work and I didn't have time to take a photo other than once The Boy was in bed asleep; my fall back photograph! I was also demonstrating to someone on twitter how to use a torch light angled and no flash on the camera as it creates a softer photograph than with flash light, and doesn't wake your sleeping child!)

8. Concentration (A little sand art was the perfect after school activity, and I love this photograph because of the concentration throughout his body.)

9. Reflecting (I took delivery of the reflector pack that I'd ordered from ebay today (having read A Party Of Seven's post about bouncing light around). It's a cheap pack but I didn't want to spend much when I'm getting used to the technique of using reflectors. The light in our house is so dim and there are so many shadows that I decided we'd try to bounce some light around. In this photograph I've used the black as a backdrop and he's sat on the gold reflector which adds warmth to his face.)

10. The Weekly Stock Shot #2 (Feeding the swans on a Friday after school has become a habit of ours, they were certainly very hungry tonight.)

11. Oh Mummy! (Again another tip from A Party Of Seven is to have something silly on your head or around the camera lens to obtain a natural shot of your child's reaction. The Boy was clambering all over the old dock machinery in Cardiff Bay today and was pulling some ridiculous faces as I tried to get a decent photo of him. I bunged his dinosaur hat on my head and called him; this is what he thought of my new headwear.)

Days 1 – 4 of Project 365

1-3 of 365

1. And sleep… (I'd hoped for a more exciting photo for the first day of the 2014 project but the day was busy and tiring and it was bedtime before I had a chance to take a photo, let alone the inclination. The Boy is on his second ear infection within six weeks and I spent a lot of the night nursing him as he screamed in pain. That saw us rush out to the Out of Hours doctor's surgery to get antibiotics, for which I was late as I had a horrendous headache and was finding it difficult to get going. Because I was late I drove too fast and set off a speed camera. I came home reticent but overjoyed to spend the afternoon with my brother and his family. Then I took mum for her Christmas present, to see Singin' In The Rain and have a meal after. I came home to discover a sweaty and sobbing little boy in pain. I hate Winter because of what it does to him.)

2. Reflecting (As we took down the Christmas tree and examined all the wonderful shininess of the baubles, we have a good old chat about our Christmas and all our favourite parts. The Boy loved seeing Edward the Elf, having new toys and spending time with people who came over to see us.)

3. Teamwork (We met up with some friends in Techniquest for the afternoon and The Boy and his friend had a great time exploring science displays and a 'Don't Do This At Home' science show.)

4. Aaaarrrr! (A friend gave us an unwanted pirate set which she'd bought from the damaged stock directly from Playmobil, randomly there was a vet in there! )

Tips For Completing a 365 Photo A Day Project

1100.

That's how many photos I've taken over the past three years.

In actual fact I've taken a great deal more photographs than that, frequently I take 1100 photos in a day if we've had a special family trip out somewhere. However I have taken at least one photograph, every day, for the past three years. The reason for this happy snapping is something called the 365 Project: A Photo A Day, Every Day, For A Year; I couldn't stop now even if I tried!

I have posted every one of those photographs on this blog under the 365 page, and it is a wonderful thing to look back on. During the past few years there have been many everyday and ordinary moments with my son and family that I would have normally forgotten. I skim through the photographs of my 365 projects and suddenly a wave of memories engulf me and I am there; I'm in the garden watching three generations of my family having a snowball fight. I cannot emphasise enough how wonderful a project it is, or how fulfilling it is to take the photograph on the last day of the year knowing that you've done it!

I've learnt a few things over the past three years that make completing a 365 Project easier, and I thought I'd share them for anyone embarking on a project this year.

Tips For Completing a 365 Photo A Day Project

  • Snap, snap and snap again:
    • This is the first and foremost guideline. I personally feel it is better to have taken ten photographs throughout the course of the day and have the choice to select the best or most apt, than to struggle to find one for the day. Developing a habit of taking photographs is not difficult and becomes second nature very quickly. I'm a bit of an expert at whipping out my phone and capturing The Boy before he's even noticed.
    • And if the worse thing happens and it gets to bedtime and you've forgotten to take a photograph, there's nothing better than a sleeping child shot. Use a torch to illuminate them and provide a warm glow rather than the flash which is harsh and risks waking your child up!
  • Always have a camera to hand:
    • It doesn't matter whether it's a phone camera or a swanky dSLR, I've often heard the expression that the best camera to have is the one in your hand. Children won't pause for you to run and get the proper camera, they also won't repeat it if you missed it as the setting was the wrong one. Photography is art, but it's also about capturing a moment. For most parents it will be entirely about remembering their child at that point in time, when you look back at the photograph in a year you won't care if it was take on a mobile phone or an £800 camera, just that it was taken.
  • Organise:
    • I had a general folder for all my 365 photos in the first year and I numbered them as to which of the 365 days they were. Disaster! During the 2013 project I set up a folder for each month and named each photograph using the date format with the day in brackets, e.g. 1st January 2014 (Wednesday). It makes it easier for me to find the relevant photographs quickly, and to check that I've got them all!

Tips For Completing a 365 Photo A Day Project

  • Edit:
    • Sometimes a photograph doesn't turn out quite as intended; the lighting might have been too dark or the colour is all wrong. Worse there may be a little photobombing incident, or a smudge or stain in the wrong place. Crop, lighten, clone or airbrush the mark. The queens of editing on mobile devices are HPMcQ and Point And Snap The World. I use Picmonkey.com to retrieve many a photograph. If the worst happens and a photograph is grainy and poorly exposed, I lighten the photograph, turn it black and white and put a little sepia filter on it. Suddenly I have an atmospheric and dramatic photograph which has been saved from the recycle bin.

Tips For Completing a 365 Photo A Day Project

  • Challenge and Improve:
    • Use the experience to hone your photography skills. I very quickly realised the importance of composing a photograph, if only to ensure there wasn't a pile of washing in the background or my shadow wasn't covering half of the subject. Work out how to take advantage of natural lighting to ensure the photograph is exposed properly or as backlighting, use the rule of thirds to help with composition, or use silhouettes to create a wonderful effect. A Party Of Seven has a fabulous series called Mammarazzi helping to explain some more advanced photography principles. You do not need a fancy camera to take fancy photos.
  • Themes:
    • Somewhere around the third month, you may well lose the desire to ever press the shutter button again. If this happens, set yourself a theme to interpret which will help freshen up your photography. The wonderful A Kilt And A Camera has used the themes 'Through' and 'From Where I Stand' for an entire year, the latter was a wonderful theme to interpret which I often borrowed in slow weeks. Likewise Carole Finds Her Wings has set herself weekly themes to follow and been very imaginative. I've also used the FatMumSlim Instagram prompts, and Britmums provide Snap Happy suggestions.
  • 365 and Blogging:
    • If posting on a blog to take part in a linky like the one I host, it is easier to do a weekly round-up post than to post daily as that is very restrictive on your free time. I use Picmonkey.com to create a collage of my seven photographs which I put into one post and write a description for each day. I also have a separate page on my self-hosted blog to keep my 365 posts on so as not to flood the main home page. Ensure that the photographs aren't too small otherwise your audience won't be able to see them properly, most websites accommodate a width of 500 pixels.
  • Enjoy:
    • Doing a 365 project should be about capturing the every day and the fun, it should be enjoyed and not feel like a chore. Capture the fun.

Other tips provided by the 365 bloggers who join in with my linky each week are:

  • Don't beat yourself up when you forget and end up with a photo of the washing up or the book you're reading.
  • Have spare batteries for your camera so you don't miss out on snaps when they run out!
  • Pick a theme you can have fun with.
  • Make your photos fit with your life, so its the good the bad and the ugly… it would be nice to have perfect well captured pics but its not going to happen in this house!
  • Don't compare photos – just because someone else has taken a professional looking picture with an all singing all dancing dSLR camera, it doesn't make your quick phone snap any less important or meaningful!
  • Don't worry about impressing anyone – it is a photo a day of your life and they are memories of your life and what is important to you. Even if it is a photo of a sleeping child, a flower in a vase or a meal you have cooked as long as it is important to you that is what matters. Don't feel stressed trying to take a better photo, just enjoy taking the ones you do.
