How To Make A Snow Picture

The Boy loves doing large scale art and when the snow fell earlier in the week, it was the perfect opportunity to get creative again. His recent painting sessions have shown that he is really keen to express himself artistically and so I wanted to allow him the freedom to make whatever picture he saw fit. I gave him the resources and let him get on with it.

We used:

  • A2 mounting card (equally could have used a cardboard box cut up)
  • various coloured paint
  • a variety of sponges and paintbrushes of different sizes and textures
  • silver, blue and white glitter
  • cotton wool
  • metallic white, foil confetti
  • glue
  • bubble wrap
  • coloured pompoms
  • talcum powder

You could also use:

  • tissue paper
  • clear cellophane

It's at this point that we talked about how he could use the different materials, it was the bubble wrap that really captured his attention. We popped a load of bubbles talked about what it felt like, looked like and how when it was stretched out it looked like a load of balls. At this point it was laid over the card and The Boy commented on how it looked like snow balls. He decided to paint a garden scene (is this one of the first pictures that they like to paint at this age? It's his most common scene for paintings!) and he set to painting with the grass and the sky.

The thing that often amuses me about infant painting is the way that the sky never reaches the ground, to them it's way above their heads and as they can't see the blue around them why would they paint it down there? The other thing that amazes me is how The Boy has always painted grass as blades of grass, never once has he painted a swishy mass for the ground. He normally wants to paint mud but was distracted on this occasion!

I framed it using a child-friendly picture frame from Ikea which has plastic 'glass' (although I've actually left this out because the painting is so 3D), and I've hung it in The Boy's bedroom for him to enjoy. As the seasons change, we'll do an updated picture to reflect the changes in nature.

Days 13-19 of Project 365

13-19 of 365

13: 'Boardwalk' (We went to the local country parks to feed the ducks the copious amount of bread we ashamedly had not eaten over the past few days. It was a beautifully sunny day, we saw the squirrels and had fun jumping in muddy puddles.)

14: 'Akimbo' (Every night before I go to bed I check on The Boy and he's normally sleeping soundly. Occasionally he's untucked. This is the first time he's been in this position.)

15: 'On the farm' (Tuesdays are a busy day for us as I invariably try and fit loads in before having to return to work the next day. This Tuesday we made cakes, did craft, played jigsaws and board games, played with the Playmobil farm, and spent time playing with his cousins.)

16: 'Picnic' (I was exhausted today after a tiring day in work teaching year six, and The Boy was

n't much happier either. Time for a picnic tea on the sofa watching the television. I popped in to check on him – he was with daddy – and found him in this state. Never mind, he was happy!)

17: 'Blanket Tunnel' (He made a tunnel by placing a blanket over my legs which were resting on a chair. Then he crawled through the tunnel, stopped there for ten minutes and played on the iPad. Can't see how he was that comfortable – neither were my legs – but whatever makes him happy!)

18: 'Catch!' (Finally our longed-for snow arrived and we spent over three hours playing in the snow throughout the day. Mr. TBaM had to work unfortunately but my boss closed the school for health and safety reasons, which meant we could have great fun outside. Here he's throwing a snowball at me which landed square in the lens of my dSLR!) This is my photographic favourite of the week.

19: 'Family Fight!' (My 67 year old mother and 37 year old husband had a snowball fight in her back garden while The Boy looked on. This really made me laugh to see three generations having such fun. I put the camera away and joined in pretty quickly.) This is my personal favourite photo of the week

Frosty The Snowman

When I became a mum, I will confess that a small part of me squealed at the thought of being able to dress The Boy up at specific times of the year; Hallowe'en and Christmas especially. He happily dressed up for his first two Christmasses, was incredibly reluctant last year and I had high hopes that he might have changed his mind for this Christmas.

Luckily when Jokers' Masquerade asked me if I'd like to review a Christmas costume for him, I tested the water and he was more than enthusiastic about it. He didn't stop asking when the nice man was going to send him his Christmas outfit and when it finally arrived, he was overjoyed.

This cute snowman costume is an all-in-one white jumpsuit with two black fabric 'buttons' sewn on the front, and yellow snowflakes embroidered on the torso. The jumpsuit does up with a few velcro fastenings on the back at the neckline, and The Boy finds it really easy to put it on and take it off himself. There is a red and green striped scarf made of double-folded fabric, and a black, floppy hat with green holly leaves red berries sewn on.

With a price of £10.99 (although it is currently on sale for £8.99), quite frankly this is an excellent price for such a good quality item. I've paid a similar price for a supermarket outfit which was badly made and a poor fit. I normally have to buy the next size up for The Boy, and opted for the medium (5-7 years) size based on past experience. Luckily the PR asked me to double-check the dress size against The Boy's measurements and the small (3-5 years) is the perfect fit for my tall boy, with plenty of room for it to be worn again next Christmas.

The Boy is completely delighted with this costume and doesn't stop asking if he can wear it, while trying to remember the lyrics to Frosty the Snowman. And that is endorsement enough for me!

I was sent this product for the purpose of this review, my opinion is honest and unbiased.
